About & methodology

Tom’s Growth Planner is a free tool from Tom Digital Build. This page explains exactly how it works, so you can judge the advice for yourself.

What it does

You answer questions about your business. The planner reads those answers against a fixed set of rules written by hand — not an artificial-intelligence service — and puts together a diagnosis, a Growth Readiness Score, a seven-day action plan, five marketing ideas and ready-to-use marketing messages you can edit.

There is no artificial intelligence, no external service and no human reviewing your answers. Everything you see is generated in your own browser from templates that react to what you typed.

Who it is for

Owner-run small businesses — a shop, a salon, a trade, a tutor, a guest house — who have limited time and a small marketing budget, and who want a sensible next step rather than a marketing course.

How recommendations are chosen

Your industry and product answers are matched against a library of trade-specific advice packs using keyword matching. The closest match supplies tasks, marketing ideas and mistakes that suit that trade; if nothing matches confidently, general small-business guidance is used instead of forcing an unsuitable recommendation.

The rest of the plan is shaped by your budget, your current channels, your location, how long you have been trading, what you have already tried and what did not work. Recommendations are de-duplicated, so you should not see the same action twice in different words.

Anything the planner assumes rather than knows is written as a bracketed prompt, for example [Add the price…]. Those brackets mark information only you can supply — never copy a message with brackets still in it.

What the score means

The Growth Readiness Score marks six areas out of 100: customer clarity (20), offer clarity (20), visibility and discoverability (20), marketing consistency (15), customer retention (15) and goal and measurement readiness (10). Each area shows why it scored what it did and one action that would raise it.

It measures how ready your marketing looks based on your answers, so you can see which area to work on first.

What the score does not mean

It is not a financial assessment, a credit check, a valuation, a scientific measure or a prediction. Nothing is verified against your accounts, your website or any outside data, and a high score does not guarantee sales. If the score disagrees with what you know about your own business, trust your own knowledge.

Review the advice before you use it

Every plan is a starting point produced by rules, not a professional recommendation for your specific situation. Read each action and each message, change anything that is not true for your business, and drop anything that does not fit. Results are not guaranteed.

This tool does not replace a qualified business consultant, and it cannot see anything you did not type in.

When to get professional advice

Speak to a suitably qualified professional before acting on anything involving money, law or compliance — for example an accountant or tax practitioner for pricing, tax and cash flow; an attorney for contracts, leases or disputes; and a registered financial adviser for funding or debt. Also check the rules that apply to your marketing, including consumer-protection and direct-marketing law, before you send bulk messages.
